# What is Indie?

> Learn Indie scripting language - Python-style code for trading. Build indicators, and automate strategies in TakeProfit. Tutorials, documentation, and real examples for building custom indicators and algo trading systems.

New to Indie? Write your first indicator with AI

Connect the TakeProfit MCP Server and let an LLM build indicators from your idea, convert scripts from
other platforms, and validate the code — no need to learn the syntax first.

**Indie** is a *technical analysis-oriented* programming language and runtime for developing indicators for the
TakeProfit platform. All built-in indicators on the platform are implemented in Indie, and TakeProfit has integrated IDE
tools that allow users to create their own indicators.

Indie is a dialect of Python and is essentially a subset of Python language constructs, with added [syntactic
sugar](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/How-Indies-syntactic-sugar-works.md) in the form of decorators (such as `@indicator` or `@algorithm`) and a few
differences in semantics. You can learn more about these differences in [this
section](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/Language-differences-with-Python.md).

For a quick understanding of the Indie code, it is recommended to go directly to the [Quick start](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/Quick-start.md) chapter.

As a product of TakeProfit, Indie is under ongoing development and many new features and capabilities are expected to be
added in the future.

## Build indicators with AI

If you are coming from another charting platform or from an exchange, you do not have to learn the language before you
get your first indicator on the chart. The [TakeProfit MCP Server](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ai-assistant/Mcp-server-guide.md) connects Claude
and other LLMs to the Indie compiler, documentation, and indicator library, so the AI can do the coding for you:

* **Write new indicators from scratch** — describe your trading idea in plain language and get working Indie code
* **Convert scripts from other languages** — paste an indicator written in Pine Script or another platform's language
  and get an Indie equivalent
* **Validate and fix the code** — the LLM checks what it writes against the real Indie compiler and corrects its own
errors before handing the code to you
* **Explain how things work** — ask about any language construct, built-in algorithm, or indicator from the Marketplace

Setup takes a few minutes and works with Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, and other MCP-compatible clients. Paste
the generated code into the [IDE widget](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ide-widget/IDE-overview.md) on the platform and it is ready to run
on your chart.
