# Indicators

> Add built-in and marketplace indicators to a chart, tune their inputs and styles, alert on their values, and build, test, and publish your own in Indie®.

Indicators

Apply, tune, or build your own

A technical indicator is a calculation on price, volume, or open interest, drawn over the chart or in a panel of its own. Pick one from the built-in library or the marketplace, tune it without touching code, or write your own in Indie®.

## Pick a source

> **[Built-in library](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/Code-examples/built-in-indicators.md)**
>
> TakeProfit's own overlays and oscillators, ready to apply. Every script is open to inspect or edit in Indie®.

> **[Marketplace](https://takeprofit.com/indicators)**
>
> Indicators and strategies published by the community, free or paid, and added to a chart from the marketplace page.

## Add an indicator to a chart

An indicator lands on the active chart, so start by picking the chart.

<ol>
  <li>
    Step 1 of 4
    Pick the chart
    With several charts in the workspace, click the one you want so it is highlighted.

    <ul>
      <li>[Charts overview](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/chart-widget/Chart-widget-overview)</li>
    </ul>
  </li>

  <li>
    Step 2 of 4
    Open the f icon
    The f icon in the chart's top control panel opens both the built-in library and the marketplace.

    <ul>
      <li>[Built-in indicators](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/Code-examples/built-in-indicators.md)</li>
    </ul>
  </li>

  <li>
    Step 3 of 4
    Apply one
    Pick an indicator and it is applied to the active chart, over the price or in a panel below it.

    <ul>
      <li>[Indicator Marketplace](https://takeprofit.com/indicators)</li>
    </ul>
  </li>

  <li>
    Step 4 of 4
    Tune it
    Click the gear next to its name above the chart. For oscillators, the gear sits below the chart area.

    <ul>
      <li>[Indicator settings](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ide-widget/indicator-settings.md)</li>
    </ul>
  </li>
</ol>

## Configure what you added

Every applied indicator has a **gear icon** next to its name above the chart; for oscillators the same icon sits below the chart area. Its settings panel has two sections:

| Section | What it changes | Examples |
| - | - | - |
| **Inputs** | How the indicator calculates its values | Length, source (close, open, high, low), standard deviation, offset, multiplier |
| **Outputs** | How each part of it looks | Line colors and styles, thickness, and whether each line or fill is shown |

**Reset Settings** at the bottom of the panel restores the defaults. [Indicator settings →](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ide-widget/indicator-settings.md)

## Use an indicator from the marketplace

All published indicators live in the [Indicator Marketplace](https://takeprofit.com/indicators), where you can filter by **Free** and **Paid**. Free and already purchased indicators have an **Add to Chart** button, so you can apply one without leaving the marketplace page.

If you would rather have an LLM pick for you, the [MCP server](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ai-assistant/Mcp-server-guide.md#discover-indicators) can search the marketplace from your AI client.

## Alert on an indicator

Any indicator on the chart can be the source of an alert: a line crossing a level, a value moving by a percentage, or two lines crossing each other. That includes your own scripts, as soon as they are saved to **My scripts**. See [Alerts](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/alerts/Alerts) for the conditions and where notifications go.

## Build your own

When nothing in the library fits, write the indicator yourself in **Indie®**, the platform's own language, close to Python.

> **[Indicator code editor](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ide-widget/IDE-overview.md)**
>
> The built-in IDE, with **Add to Chart** to test what you wrote.

> **[Indie® language](https://takeprofit.com/docs/indie/Overview)**
>
> Syntax, data model, library reference, and code examples.

> **[Write with AI](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ai-assistant/AI-assistant-IDE.md)**
>
> Describe the idea in plain words, convert a script from another platform, and have the code validated. Needs All-In or your own Anthropic API key.

The [MCP server](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/ai-assistant/Mcp-server-guide.md) does the same from your own AI client. Any open-source indicator can also be forked: click the **Source Code** icon on it and the IDE opens with your own copy.

## Test a strategy

Indicators that place orders are strategies. Run them against history in the [Strategy tester](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/backtesting-widget/backtest-widget.md) to see how the logic behaved on past data. A backtest is not a forecast of live results.

## Publish and earn

Finished indicators can be published to the marketplace: free, to grow an audience, or paid. See [Sell your indicators](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/monetization-tools/Sell-your-indicators.md) for the revenue split and the publishing flow.

## Good to know

* **An indicator lands on the active chart.** Click the chart you want first when the workspace has several.
* **Settings don't change the code.** Inputs and outputs tune the indicator on the chart; to change its logic, fork or edit the script in the IDE.
* **Built-in scripts are open.** Read the source of any built-in indicator to see how it is calculated, or start your own from it.
* **Order flow has its own built-ins.** [CVD and Delta Volume](https://takeprofit.com/docs/guide/platform/indicators/cvd-delta-volume.md) read the taker side of real exchange trades rather than estimating it from candles.
* **Alerts don't need a published script.** A private script saved to My scripts can already trigger alerts.
